Brand New Blue Card - Children Protection

Monday, February 6th, 2006

A positive Notice blue card has been granted on 1 February 2006. It has been issued by The Commission for Children and Young People and Child Guardian - an organisation which promotes and protects the rights, interests and wellbeing of all Queenslanders under 18. These all mean that I now am eligible to teach realigion in Ironside State School this year. Every person who has a job - includes voluntary job - which related to children and young people needs this blue card as a guarantee for children’s safety. It is a very brilliant idea to create such system to protect children in Australia - so far I know in Queensland state since this blue card belong to the state. The wonder is that these people can put the idea into action and go within the system. Children protection is becoming a serious issues and it is everybody’s business. Smlogo1

The duty of the commision are to 1) monitor and review laws, policies and practices impacting on services provided to children and young people. 2) administer a state-wide Community Visitor Program for children and young people in alternative care - including foster care. 3) receive and investigate complaints about services to children and young people known to the Department of Child Safety. 4) maintain Child Death Register, administering the Child Death Case Review Committee and conducting research into child deaths. 5) employment screening of certain types of child-related employment. 6) educate the community to comply with the Commission’s Act. 7) monitor and review laws policies and practices that impact on the safety and wellbeing of vulnerable children and young people risk. 8) conduct research into issues impacting on the safety and well being of children and young people. 9) promote laws, policies and practices that uphold the rights, interests and wellbeing of children and young people, particularly those at risk.

Getting the blue card gives me two inspirations; firstly is about caring and protection for children in my country, secondly is about my responsobility of teaching religion in the state school.

Copying all those important matters from http://www.ccypcg.qld.gov.au/about/index.html about children protection and their wellbeing, I suddenly think about the Constant Gardener movie that had a setting in Kenya where people and children are less protected and even became a victim of a wicked experiment by the European scientist. But it’s just a movie. It would be wothwile if I am thinking about my own country where the condition of children protection is absent. I am wondering when Indonesian people celebrated their children national day without considering their wellbeing and protection. Children and young people in Indonesia is a major number in statistic but the concern about children is nothing. The prove of being ignorant to the children wellbeing is the increasing number of the children in the street earning money by being a busker-street singer. In addition, there are some cases about sexual harassment to the children (mostly very young girl) that was committed by adult. This hideous phenomenon can be prevented by screening for people who work or play with children as in Australia is having the blue card. Take a look at some points above that we might adopt them to be our reference in putting the ideas of children protection into action. Wait … by the way … do Indonesian people have that ideas? I believe some individual who concern about their children must have had this ideas but the key is the government and system. UU perlindungan hak anak seems not to be working at all. PUT the IDEAS into ACTION.

Secondly, it is my concern about being responsibe teaching religion. I repeat T-e-a-c-h-i-n-g  R-e-l-i-g-i-o-n, what the heck? It’s absolutely not applicable to my own character. To be the figure of a religion teacher is not my figure at all. So getting this blue card somehow give me a doubt, would I be able to teach them? How about my religion insight? A big fat nothing. But my reason to be a voluteer in teaching was just because nobody was willing do that. I don’t understand myself while there are a lot more people who are capable in this job. However, at least I have my positive thought that telling me to say yes to go for it. My positive tought told me that by teaching I could be the best learner. Could I?

By the way, doubting myself to have this voluntary teaching make me stay queite discreetly in receiving blue card - not telling any parents who expect me to teach [otherwise one of you guys read my blog here]. What sould I start to teach? Any Ideas?

After all, is anybody outhere care about this?

Note: I do not expect anything but the reference for The state school. My wish is just please show their concern about their children by putting the ideas into action.
